Sludge thickening is the process of increasing the solids concentration in wastewater sludge by removing some of the water, making the sludge easier and more efficient to handle later, especially before digestion or dewatering. The idea is to reduce the volume of sludge and prepare a sludge that digests more effectively and dewaters more readily.

Two common methods are gravity thickening and mechanical thickening. Gravity thickening relies on settling; sludge is placed in a large tank where solids settle slowly due to gravity, forming a thicker layer of sludge with clarified liquid separating on top. Mechanical thickening uses equipment to accelerate water removal, such as gravity belt thickeners or rotary drum/thickening devices, which actively concentrate the sludge as it moves through the unit.

This is different from removing odors with chemical scrubbing, reducing solids, or heating sludge for disposal, which are not thickening processes.
